Schwarz Excavations was founded in 1986 by Noel and Patricia Schwarz in Gracemere, Central Queensland. We began with a single mini excavator and truck, providing contract excavation services to local builders and plumbers. Over the years, Schwarz steadily expanded our fleet, adding more machinery such as excavators, trucks, and bobcats to meet growing demand.
In 1991, Schwarz established a pivotal business relationship with Queensland Rail, marking our entry into rail maintenance services. This partnership was a turning point, as the demand for rail maintenance increased significantly, especially with the rise in coal transportation along the Central Queensland rail network. By 2006, Noel and Patricia’s son, Jeffrey became a Director of the company, further strengthening our leadership as the workforce grew from five to 70 employees within a decade.
Recognising the need for innovation in rail maintenance, we pioneered the development and acquisition of Hi-Rail Excavators, revolutionising our business operations. These undercutters enhanced efficiency and profitability, setting new industry standards and positioning us as civil construction experts in Queensland.

In 2015, we diversified our business model to include plant hire, civil construction, and bulk/heavy haulage, responding to industry demands and opportunities. This strategic expansion allowed us to offer a comprehensive suite of services across various sectors.
A major milestone was achieved in 2022, when MAAS Group Holdings Limited acquired Schwarz. This acquisition aligned with the values of both companies and marked an exciting new chapter for us. Jeffrey Schwarz played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition and continues to lead the company as General Manager, driving our success and growth within the community.
MAAS Group is an Australian diversified industrial service and real estate business, providing materials, equipment, and services across property, civil, infrastructure and mining industries. With a growing team of over 1,800 employees, MAAS manages quarries, concrete plants, assets for hire, manufacturing facilities, and a portfolio of commercial and residential lots. Based in Dubbo, NSW, MAAS operates across Australia, with a strong presence in regional areas and international locations.
This partnership enhances Schwarz’s capabilities and resources, allowing us to deliver even greater value to our clients while staying true to our local roots. Today, Schwarz stands as a respected leader in rail maintenance, civil construction, and bulk/heavy haulage contracting, with a strong presence in Central Queensland and a pioneering role in Australian rail line maintenance.
