Rookwood Weir

The Project

Winner of the Australian Construction Achievement Award 2024, The Rookwood Weir (Managibei Gamu) is the largest weir built since World War 2; designed with an innovative fish and turtle passage for support of upstream navigation and breeding the weir holds up-to 860,000 megalitres of water annually, the same as over 34,000 olympic swimming pools. Schwarz were engaged as the bulk earthworks subcontractor, providing wet hire plant and equipment for the 400,000 cubic metre cut to fill scope.

The Scope

Under the supervision of Acciona, Schwarz provided wet hire plant and operators assisting in the completion of the below scopes:
  • Major temporary works to provide safe access to permanent works including construction of temporary access roads and a river crossing, cofferdam earthworks, and temporary river diversion earthworks.
  • Construction of a temporary workers accommodation camp for 250 personnel
  • Clearing and grubbing of the project area
  • Execution of over 400,000m³ in earthworks (cut to fill, cut to stockpile, and stockpile to fill)
  • Plant provision for the project included Excavators 5t-70t, Moxys, Water Tankers, Graders
