Celebrating 40 years of Schwarz: from a single mini excavator to an industry leader

In 1986, the Central Queensland landscape looked a little different. In the heart of Gracemere, a small family business began with a single mini excavator and a simple mission: to provide reliable, local excavation services to the community. Founded by Noel and Patricia Schwarz, the company started with just a single mini excavator and a truck, providing contract services to local builders and plumbers.

As we celebrate 40 years in business in 2026, that modest operation has evolved into Schwarz as it is today, recognised across central Queensland as a premier civil infrastructure partner that has retained its small-business culture and unwavering attention to quality.

The Schwarz history: your neighbours who became infrastructure experts

The Schwarz history is a story of resilience and vision. What started as Noel and Patricia’s one-man-and-a-machine operation transformed as the team steadily added excavators, trucks, and bobcats to meet the region’s growing demand.

A pivotal turning point arrived in 1991, when Schwarz established a relationship with Queensland Rail. This marked our entry into specialised rail maintenance, a sector that grew rapidly alongside the rise in coal transportation across the Central Queensland rail network.

By 2006, the next generation stepped into leadership as Noel and Patricia’s son, Jeffrey Schwarz, became a Director. Under Jeffrey’s leadership, the business saw incredible growth, with the workforce expanding from five to 70 employees in just a single decade.

While our capabilities have scaled to include massive civil construction projects and bulk haulage, our roots remain firmly planted in the red dust of Central Queensland. For four decades we have lived where we work, building the roads and infrastructure that improve the daily lives of the Rockhampton and Gracemere communities.

40 years – thousands of successful projects

Our one-man and one plant approach has vastly changed over four decades. We now offer comprehensive solutions across rail construction and maintenance, civil construction, wet and dry plant hire and even bulk haulage

We are privileged to have an amazing team of staff and contractors and a massive fleet of civil construction equipment. A key driver of our success was recognising the need for innovation early on; we pioneered the development and acquisition of Hi-Rail Excavators and undercutters. This specialised technology revolutionised our operations, enhancing efficiency and setting new industry standards for rail maintenance in Australia.
