The Project

The BW-03-006 Culvert Package represents a landmark achievement in sustainable infrastructure and practical engineering within the rail corridor. Tasked with rehabilitating access roads plagued by scouring and water damage, our team developed a pioneering Sleeper Causeway solution. This project not only restored critical access but also redefined how recycled materials are used across the Aurizon network, setting a new benchmark for cost-effective, durable drainage solutions in remote environments.

The Scope

  • Developed and installed a sleeper causeway design that was formally adopted into the Aurizon Standard for Sleeper Causeways, influencing network-wide infrastructure practices
  • Restored access roads affected by continuous scouring through professional reshaping, compaction, and ground stabilisation to ensure long-term durability
  • Repurposed and recycled Aurizon-supplied concrete sleepers previously considered waste to reduce environmental impact and overall project expenditure
  • Prepared ground to below invert level with geofabric underlays and reinforced steel (reo bar) tying to create robust, low-maintenance causeways suitable for rail environments
  • Delivered a highly cost-effective alternative to traditional concrete causeways, providing a significant advantage in remote locations where concrete transport is logistically difficult
  • Installed rock pitching and gabion baskets at culvert outlets to manage hydraulic energy, reducing surface washouts and maximising asset protection
  • Enhanced access road conditions across the network to provide safer and more reliable movement for maintenance crews and operational vehicles
  • Installed delineators and safety markers in full compliance with Aurizon safety protocols and rail corridor work methods
  • Received high commendation from Aurizon leadership for the innovative approach and long-term value created through the practical sleeper causeway design
